Review of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant (2009) by Jenny N — 11 Nov 2011
Alright, so this movie isn't the best and we all know books to movies usually are a lot worse. I think it falls into the ranks of the Harry Potter movies, though -- cheesey humor taking away sometimes from the seriousness of the situation.
Also, combining 3 books into a movie is always hard. You miss your favorite minor characters (Debbie, Sam, and RV in this case). This movie also took a beating to Evra's character, making him a musician and created Mr.
Tiny's character...not as evil, but more crazy and humorous. Steve, however, was perfectly casted, unlike a good portion of the cast. Given, the movie actually is better than the trailer. I think the only reason I truely like this movie is because this book series is quite possibly my favorite right after HP.
There's so much depth to them, and not many children's series now and days actually have a deeper meaning beyond romance (ahem Twilight). I think this new Twilight craze seriously takes away from this movie that has been in production longer than Twilight has been a phenomenon.
Though this movie is still a lot better than Twilight. Atleast the characters can act (some only to an extent) and the movie production quality is good. Personally, though, I would rather people stop comparing this to Twilight, because there's really no comparison.
Twilight is a romantic's dream, while Cirque du Freak ranks higher on the thinking scale (well, maybe not the movie, sadly, but you can't do much when, again, a movie combines 3 books).
