Review of Cinemania (2002) by Mark D — 27 Apr 2010
If you've ever felt bad about being an obsessive film geek, then all you need to do to feel better is watch "Cinemania", a documentary about REALLY obsessive film geek who LITERALLY spend every waking moment of their lives watching movies.
This is quite a fascinating and engrossing look at a lifestyle where film is not just a passion, but practically an addiction; film buffs will find a lot to identify with here, but may be the only viewers who can actually sympathize with the people portrayed here.
The five main subjects do have their charm, but are not always the most likable and interesting people to watch, and the fact that they don't have ANYTHING in their lives besides their movie watching makes it hard for the film to build up any compelling drama; this whole venture may have been better off as a one-hour TV special than a feature-length documentary.
I think it's very telling at the end when the five subjects are shown a rough cut of this film and joke that it should have been a six-hour mini-series; in actuality, their lives are only interesting enough to make for a documentary that barely runs 80 minutes.
