Review of Cinema Verite (2011) by George D — 12 Jun 2011
A good "fictional" movie made about the 1st "reality" t.v. show. I'm glad to now know what good intentioned high minded work I can thank for the low minded crap clogging the air waves (and the minds of their simple minded fans).
Every time the subject of reality t.v. comes up, it reminds me of the electron microscope. When an electron microscope is used, it effects the thing being observed (since the light beam has to be diffracted by the specimen).
In addition biological specimens typically are required to be chemically fixed, dehydrated and embedded in a polymer resin to stabilize them sufficiently to allow ultrathin sectioning. Sections of biological specimens, organic polymers and similar materials may require special staining with heavy atom labels in order to achieve the required image contrast.
Thus the objects being observed are considerably effected. And like the objects being observed by the electron microscope, the people on reality t.v. are "affected" by the presence of cameras.
And much like the fact that electron microscope samples largely have to be viewed in vacuum (as the molecules that make up air would scatter the electrons), humans on the other hand can not be viewed in a vacuum since we cannot truly exist in one.
"Reality" television and the media / people who thrive upon it are the ultimate anti-vacuum and are instead a self referential resonance chamber (A resonance chamber uses resonance to amplify sound.
The chamber has interior surfaces which reflect an acoustic wave. When a wave enters the chamber, it bounces back and forth within the chamber with low loss. As more wave energy enters the chamber, it combines with and reinforces the standing wave, increasing its intensity.
) Thus it is a place where their inane utterances bounce around and amplify in an echo chamber until it can't help but drown out the profound things others are trying to consume.
