Review of Cinema Paradiso (1988) by Stuart R — 07 Jul 2011
There's some lovely scenes in this nostalgic homage to cinema, where a boy, Salvatore is befriended by a cinema projectionist. It's beautifully filmed too. There is one particularly magical moment - but that is quickly followed by the tragedy at the centre of the film, a moment that seems slightly implausible somehow.
From then on it wavers and struggles a little. There is some romance and perhaps that could have been taken further; and that might have concluded things nicely. But instead we move on to the mature Salvatore - a whole latter chunk of the film which seems overly indulgent and drawn-out.
And I just didn't quite have the feeling of endearment towards the supporting characters that I think I was supposed to. It's an okay watch but I can't help feeling like this is a film with a too high opinion of itself!
