Review of Cinema Paradiso (1988) by James K — 19 May 2011
***SPOILERS***.
This is really an astounding film. It's a celebration of cinema at its most basic level. Not as a money making device but as something for people to enjoy and to bring communities together, such as the one protrayed here. Cinema is a thing of real beauty and that's the centre of the idea here.
Cinema Paradiso is more than just a homage to classic cinema though. If it wasn't it would be rather hollow, however it is a classic in its own right. The story is funny and moving and one of great emotional resonance but it is also one which packs a different kind of punch as well.
The heart of the scenario are themes of commericalism and censorship. The scenes that the priest edits from the films before the public can see them because they are supposedly indecent are really moments of great beauty as we find out at the conclusion. Add to this the ageing of the Cinema Paradiso and impact of more commercial interests on the way it functions.
All in all Cinema Paradiso is a film with many facets that together form a masterpiece for the ages. I don't even think I'm overstating anything here I loved it that much. It is one which will challenge audiences on an emotional level but also on an intellectual one too. Excellent.
