Review of Cinema Paradiso (1988) by Raji K — 01 Mar 2015
Cinema Paradiso is a film about films. The movie encapsulates why we see movies, and juxtaposes how real life can be anything, but film. The film itself covers so many aspects of movies from censorship, technology, romance and encapsulates all of them in a small town theatre called Cinema Paradiso.
Our heroin is a young boy Salvatore who befriends a kind projectionist and is inspired by films. His childhood is much like a movie, filled with magic dreams and hope. As he ages reality sets in and it can be harsh, with lost loves, and death.
Only due to his long friend Alfredo's death does he come back to revisit his old town and all that has transpired in the 30 years since he left everything. The movie really is magical and inspiring and does so many things well.
I cannot recommend this movie enough, for this movie is why we see movies in so many ways.
