Review of Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (2002) by Sally Z — 10 May 2011
"Cinderella II: Dreams Come True" follows the latest Disney's trend of releasing direct-to-video sequels of its most popular classics. The movie presents three stories about what happened after the first film's ending. The narrative device that interwines the stories are Cinderella's mice friends, who are writing them in a book, with the help of the fairy godmother.
The movie is ridden with problems, the most notorious one being the quality of the stories itself. They really feel like they belong to a bad Cinderella TV series, and not to a sequel to the beloved Disney classic. The narrative is terrible and the stories doesn't make any sense, but should they? Does a children movie really have to make sense? Well, the first Cinderella movie made perfect sense to me, even as an adult, and that's part of what make it work for audiences of all ages. A children movie doesn't work only because it entertains the 3 years old kids, but it should be able to be taken as a "family" movie aswell.
The animated backgrounds lack the detail of any disney movie you compare it to, and the characters' animation is mediocre at best. Speaking of characters, why do everyone seem to be so out of character in this? They don't feel like the same protagonists/antagonists from the previous film at all.
The music is another low point here. The whole film is full of pop songs that don't go well with anything we are seeing on screen. In conclusion, just don't watch this.
