Review of Cinderella (2021) by Pattychiari — 05 Sep 2021
The casting is truly spot on. I feel like Camila Cabello was the perfect choice to play this kind of Cinderella: funny, sweet, but fearless and doesn’t take sh*t from nobody! And Billy Porter…ohh lord, a queer black man as the fab G? I’m so impressed by him and the director Kay Cannon, who wrote his lines with him in mind.
The songs fit the storyline in a way that it seems like they’re just continuing their dialogue, which is really hard to do for a whole film. The message for young girls is: your happiness is your own responsibility, you can’t find it in a prince! Even though that will come too.
Please let this be the version of Cinderella your kids will see.
