Review of Churchill (2017) by David C — 08 Jun 2017
Brian Cox does a commendable job in the role of Winston Churchill, but he is a little too long-faced to really look like Churchill. He is the most successful visually when he is puffing on a cigar and wearing the trademark hat. John Slattery was not believable as Dwight D.Eisenhower, and seemed too wishy washy.
Miranda Richardson almost stole the show as Clementine Churchill. She really should have left Winston. Ella Purnell's secretary character seemed to be in the movie for just one important scene, late in the footage. Her movie makeup made her look more Italian than English or British.
Winston Churchill came across as being a has-been, now little respected, and hung up on things that happened back in World War I. The plot just seemed to go on and on, and was as repetitive as a rap tune. Mercifully, it did eventually end. I actually considered walking out early on, and I have only done that once in my 64 years, but my curiosity kept me watching. Truthfully, though, I should have done what Clementine was considering. Overall, I found the plot not very believable, and the movie not very convincing.
