Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Will T — 05 May 2008
This is my favorite Wong Kar Wai film so far. It is essentially two short films loosely connected by the theme of misguided love and it seems to have the purest Wong style, with a memorable soundtrack (either because the music is distinctive or the same songs are repeated a hundred times), strobey action sequences down narrow Hong Kong back alleys, super vibrant environments, and characters who all have a quirk or two that drives them for the duration of the film.
This is a more simple film than I am used to seeing from Wong with a very palatable presentation. I really want to go to Hong Kong now.
