Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Kenneth S — 22 Dec 2008
Here we have a fantastic little film from Hong Kong, from director Wong Kar-wai. A brilliant little endeavor that just gets better every time one watches it. The film is broken up into two stories. The first one is about a love-sick cop who is pining for his lost love.
He buys a can of pineapple a day, with an expiration date of May 1, and vows to eat every can on that date, provided his girlfriend doesn't come back. Meanwhile, he encounters a mysterious woman, who we know deals in drugs, but he does not know.
The second story is about a young woman who falls for a different cop. She sneaks into his apartment and begins cleaning it. Like the characters in the film, the film itself seems as though to be looking for love through a trial and error effect.
The first story is a more dark and hectic one, and when that doesn't pan out, the film shifts to a more idealistic, dreamy kind of love story. The music in the film sticks in my head the most dominantly, for the opening music creates a definite mood, and the two songs in the second half (I don't want to spoil all the surprises!) are a bit off-kilter and make the film utterly unforgettable.
A true cinematic wonder.
