Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Martin F — 15 Feb 2009
Randon, funny and quirky as hell, it has been a while since I have become so completely immersed and invested in a film.
Whilst the stories are seemingly slight, the characters populating the tales breath so much life into the film, I found it impossible not to watch and get drawn in and once the film has ended, it becomes clearer that the stories do have a fair amount of depth hiding there.
The cast are uniformly excellent, but I have to single out Faye Wong. She is absolutely adorable in this film and watching her dance around the cafe to California Dreaming just melted my heart. She is funny, intriguing and very kooky, providing the film with many of it's memorable moments.
The visuals and locations are absolutely beautiful to watch. The use of slo mo and distortions at the beginning really set the scene for what is to come and every scene is framed like a picture. The music choices are completely inspired as well. The repeated use of California Dreaming and Dreams are so effective and create a great mood that compliments the stories.
In a nutshell, this is simply awesome....
