Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Eric J — 26 Apr 2009
Good screenplay, but a boring and amateurish movie. I didn't care for the directors visual style at all. It's blurry and seems like a bad student film in parts. I enjoyed the first story a lot more.
It's much more believable and the dialog is brilliant. The two leads were terrific. The second story is quite boring, aside from the dialog. Faye Wong tries to re-arrange her love interests' life while he's simply looking for meaning.
It sounds boring and it is. The musical score is good and I'll never listen to California Dreamin' ever again without thinking of this movie. I'll tell ya what though. Asian screenwriters are really something else and really overlooked.
No wonder we remake most of their films. When does American Oldboy come out?
