Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Bryan W — 28 Apr 2009
It's hardly the groundbreaking movie that most film student literature makes it out to be, but it nevertheless remains a fascinating romantic dramedy with enough of all three elements to satisfy fans of any crossover of the three forms or the forms individually.
It's never overly depressing or laugh-out-loud funny, but it's bound to strike a chord with anyone who has ever felt heartache. It's quirkiness is somewhat offset by the overt references to the French New Wave (is Brigette Lin standing in for the relationship between Anna Karina and Jean-Luc Godard?) and the awful, awful overuse of 'California Dreaming', but anyone who can look past these minor quibbles can find a minimally satisfying film, and there's nothing wrong with that.
