Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Sean T — 09 Nov 2009
A Hong Kong film set in Hong Kong, there are two distinct stories told, one in each half. Both are sprawling and hard to understand, with expressive but uncommunicative scenes depicting characters living ordinary lives.
Genuine character development is nowhere to be found, with the characters interacting but not communicating. The acting is often too restrained (mostly from the men), and sometimes annoying (Faye Wong).
Also, the use of music is not artistic (playing California Dreaming about five times). The presentation is somewhat inventive, but ultimately this film doesn't have anything important to say.
