Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Dylan N — 14 Nov 2009
A complete whirlwind of color and noise and feeling drawn with the eye of a master painter, Chungking Express undoubtedly deserves praise for its glorious, kaliedoscopic visuals. To truly appreciate the film requires both an immense knowledge of the difficulty of creating something this strikingly magnificent, and an appreciation for its defiance of storytelling conventions.
But above all, it requires a deeply imbued empathy for the leaden melancholy burdening the film's primary players, the hollow aching of loneliness and the fragility of everything romantic and human.
