Review of Chungking Express (1994) by Michael L — 10 Feb 2013
What's there to say about Wong Kar Wai's 'Chungking Express'? It's a visual spectacular that put a big ol' grin on my face, and if you love film, you'll understand why. The movie is about two cops looking for romance (both of whom frequent a fast-food joint called the 'Midnight Express').
The first one (Cop 223), having just been dumped, pursues a mysterious woman with a blonde wig and sunglasses. The other (Cop 663), is recuperating from his break-up with a flight-attendant, but catches the fancy of an employee at the 'Midnight Express' (Faye Wong).
The first one is fun and sets the mood, but the second one is the real charmer. Quentin Tarantino once introduced a screening by recalling how it made him cry. Not because it was sad, but because he was "so happy to love a movie this much.
" I loved this film, and if you're like me, you'll be smiling throughout. Highly recommended.
