Review of Christopher Robin (2018) by James A — 03 Aug 2018
I RARELY applaud a movie. I feel it is a wasteful gesture for a screen, as no one who actually did any of the work is there to appreciate the applause, but I couldn't help myself! Heck, I wasn't even "supposed" to be AT the theater, to begin with, but this, THIS is, I am certain, EXACTLY what A.
A. Milne had envisioned when he penned each "Winnie the Pooh" adventure! MacGregor comes into his own here (Again? Yes. again) He solidly portrays just enough of a childishness wonderment trapped inside for us to get a sense that it's in there and believable for us when Winnie and crew interact with him, but when he's dealing with his "real life" family and his boss, he nails the worry and stress of a man who really must find a way to drop the cost of a luggage company's production by 20% in one weekend or face firing people on Monday morning while facing the disappointment of his wife and daughter.
As a father, myself and someone who has always believed that maybe I related a bit too much with Christopher Robin and suffered for it as a result, I can safely say that I believe I have a unique perspective on this role.
Ewan was PERFECT! As for Brad Garrett? What's to be said? I wondered why he sounded so much "like" Eyeore. Well, that's because he IS Eyeore! The same goes for Jim Cummings! The rest of the crew did a fantastic job, as well! As an aspiring voice actor, myself, I can again say that I'm coming from a fairly unique place when I say that this was no small feat and that this cast has done a fantastic job! The writing was there, the acting was there.
.. It's all there! We'll be there the day this comes out on Blu-Ray to get the FIRST copy to hit the shelf!
