Review of Choke (2008) by Frank K — 28 Jul 2010
Come on, its a Sam Rockwell movie...based on a Chuck Palahniuk novel...that right there earns this film the first 50% on sheer greatness alone. Sam Rockwell man...the guy is so fun to watch, so perfectly sleazy and funny and brilliant that the character transcends the entire film.
Rockwell is just so capable as an actor that I never once stopped enjoying myself, even as the film hit occasional dry spots. The film isn't bad at all, it's a funny, heartwarming, sad, and surprising sex addict comedy/avant-garde drama built around a ridiculous but smart story.
Unfortunately the execution of that story wasn't perfect, the film gets bogged down by too many hospital visits to an excellent but poorly directed Angelica Houston as crazy mom (I felt the same way during the Palahniuk adaptation of Fight Club, which was bogged down by the "romance" between Tyler and Marla).
Still, it's Rockwell...and it's got a crazy twist ending thrown in there for good measure. Definitely worth seeing.
