Review of Choke (1971) by David A — 27 Jul 2009
This wasn't really a bad movie but guess it just left me deeply disappointed. You turn a great book into a movie with friggin' Sam Rockwell in the leading role. How can you not make just kind of a kick ass movie? And the character of the sex addict Victor Mancini is the perfect weirdo for Rockwell so it ought to have been at least a little bit more cool.
The main problem is the flow of the movie. It simply goes by too fast. It never slows down. Mancini says so himself: "When it (his life) slows down, I get bored". Actor turned director, Clark Gregg, is clearly afraid that the movie will be bored as well if he turns the pace down a bit. That would not have been the case though. In that way we might've even had some identification with the character and his locked-in-situation. As it is though, there's no emotional connection or sympathy established at all. Hmm. Too bad.
