Review of Choke (1971) by Hunter D — 15 Dec 2010
Sam Rockwell is great, as always, however Chuck Palahniuk's brand of misanthropy got old by his second novel, and after reading CHOKE I was pretty much over what he had to offer as a writer. You see a lot of the same stuff we saw done better in FIGHT CLUB, including support groups, hatred for the daily grind known as a "job," and strange sexual relationships.
CHOKE is a more restrained effort than FIGHT CLUB, but it's also nowhere near as engaging. Rockwell has to carry the entire film on his shoulders, it's just a shame his effort is hard to care about.
