Review of Chocolat (2000) by Jess M — 15 Jun 2013
This is a delightful and uplifting film based on the novel by Joanne Harris. Vianne (Juliette Binoche) and her daughter Anouk arrive in a French village, a place dominated by the church and the local mayor, Comte Paul de Reynaud (Alfred Molina). Vianne opens a Chocolaterie and despite the disapproval and discouragement of the mayor, she gradually wins the hearts of the locals. Vianne quickly becomes part of the life of the village, with characters portrayed by a good supporting cast including Judi Dench, Carrie-Anne Moss and Lena Olin. When a group of gypsies, including charming Roux (Johnny Depp), arrive in town, this leads to further conflict between Vianne and the mayor.
I loved this film the first time I watched it. It is funny, moving, well acted and a good story. Highly recommended.
