Review of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) by Bob V — 06 Oct 2010
Let's see: Dick Van Dyke, the Sherman Brothers, Sally Ann Howes as a last minute replacement for an unavailable Julie Andrews, two adorable children, song and laughter, one song even sounding exactly like "Feed the Birds"...
Sorry Tom dear, but to me, this is a rather tepid Mary Poppins knock-off, done to steal a slice from the Disney pie, and not done terribly well. We'll never know for sure, but even had I never heard of Mary Poppins, I don't think I would have liked this film much. It's just a bunch of almost-but-not-quite, and even now, after having just seen it, I can't hum any of the songs (whenever I try, "Feed the birds" pops up instantly).
A dissapointment.
