Review of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) by M O — 19 Dec 2012
Fun family movie originally written by James Bond author Ian Fleming. Roald Dahl's script is perfect and performances by Dick Van Dyke, Sally Ann Howes, Gert Frobe, Robert Helpmann, Benny Hill and many others is excellent, in spite of Ken Hughes mediocre direction.
The movie attempts to be a family oriented Disney fantasy film along the lines of Disney's classic, "Mary Poppins". A large part of what makes the movie charming are the performances of Dick Van Dyke and the two children, Heather Ripley and Adrian Hall, with music by legendary Disney songwriters, Richard M.
Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. It comes close to being a classic, but doesn't quite suceed like "Mary Poppins". The running time is a bit long for a family movie, clocking in at 2 hours 25 minutes.
At least 25 minutes should have been shaved from the film. Still, it is alot of fun, however old fashioned and quaint and children should love it.
