Review of Chinatown (1974) by Performance P — 22 Jan 2011
Chinatown redefines the genre of film noir, something that was dominated during the golden age of cinema. This type of story is perfectly brought to light by director Roman Polanski. The genre of film noir has only been properly brought to film in the 1997 film L.A. Confidential recently. It is a rare commercial art form in today's cinema.
Jack Nicholson is a perfect cast for this type of role, the seedy private eye who is finds himself in a little too deep. Of course, this is one of Nicholson break out roles. Faye Dunaway also plays the role of the girl who plays dumb but really has a lot of secrets and know-how.
Polanski's pace, editing and timing really creates the film noir feel. This is the key to the film. He seems to really understands this genre.
