Review of Chinatown (1974) by Marios P — 12 Dec 2011
Perfection is not good enough to describe this amazing film.
The Noir genre is upgraded to a new level.
It's very suspenseful and it never lets you feel bored.
Polanski manages to create a nightmare-like habitat in which all characters are trapped in their own desperation and they cannot escape.
And of course the deeply emotionally damaged characters couldn't exist without the superb performances(especially Nicholson).
But the most important thing is the ending.
The bad guys won and the girl who had such a tragic life was killed in the end.
The ending without justice and the phrase : It's Chinatown are there to show us that life is unfair.
That justice and being happy aren't an option.
That we are living in a world that the most awful people are in charge and that they are capable of everything.
That it's pointless to try and make a difference and be moral.
That you won't get anything by being a decent person in an indecent time.
That message is horrible and very pessimistic according to my little opinion but still this movie is best of the best.
