Roman Polanski deserves much credit for this best-in-color noir, but it is Robert Towne's script that puts it in the pantheon of gumshoe films. Jack Nicholson as Jake Gittes could almost make one forget Humphrey Bogart wore these same shoes to perfection 30 years earlier.
No one had come close to filling them until this picture arrived.
