Review of Chinatown (1974) by Anthony I — 27 Apr 2015
"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown." But how could you forget it? This is the slick, stunning, haunting film noir that the 70's needed. It's a sardonic spin on an old hollywood tradition.
Even in a vast switch between genres, Polanski's narrative structure is similar here as it was in Rosemary's Baby. The characters plod along and the story takes it's sweet time in unraveling, making you ill-prepared for the shocking conclusion.
The ending to this movie is entirely unexpected, and gruesome, and then the credits roll, and that's that. This movie is wicked cool.
