Review of Chinatown (1974) by Brendan C — 01 Feb 2013
This is a very bleak neo-noir film that is made great by a unique style, and a great performance from Jack Nicholson. J.J. Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is a private detective. People come to him when their spouse is cheating them.
He gets scammed to spy on a man, and then that man eventually is murdered. It is about how he figures out who did it, and it has a crazy ending. This is a film that is all acting, directing, screen writing, and the setting.
The film is not meant to have a great plot, or to be really entertaining. It was meant to show all the skills that go into making a movie, and they are the same skills I mentioned in my last sentence.
Jack Nicholson plays a very unusual role for him, because he usually plays crazy guys. This is his third bets performance after One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, and As Good As It Gets. L.A. Confidential is the movie that gets compared to this the most.
I still have to see it because I know if you like Chinatown you will like L.A. Confidential. This is a great film that I will probably look back on for inspiration when I want to write a screenplay for a crime film.
