Review of Chinatown (1974) by Tsubaki S — 09 Aug 2011
"Forget it Jake, It's Chinatown..." Best ending line in film history? In my opinion, yes! What I love is that film-noire can still be made and is seen so much, but none are quite like Chinatown.
This film takes exactly what noir films were like in the 40's and 50's and went to the top of the list. Jake Gittes is always two steps ahead and smart as a whistle. And yet you sense something dark in his past.
Just add the drought as a backdrop, a love interest, cut noses, and murder. What do you get? Chinatown.
