Completely original, weird, and thrilling. "Chimes at Midnight" manages to resist the temptation to create a fully reverent Shakespeare adaptation, and the result has more life than any other Shakespeare film.
Some of the comic bits don't work and the lip-synch flaws can be somewhat distracting, but it hardly matters. The Battle of Shrewsbury and the ultimate discading of Falstaff by Hal are as good as anything Welles or anyone else has done.
