Review of Chimes at Midnight (1965) by Lee G — 07 Dec 2007
It's a low-budget mess that barely manages to pull its ragged ends together: just as Shakespeare's plays were originally put on! Olivier's big-screen Bard epics were as polished as they were stilted, and Brannaugh's quest for textual accuracy is often headache-inducing.
Orson Welles offers a kinetic, fearsome, comic, and tender film plus a virtuosic performance which assures his crown as cinema's premiere Shakespearean auteur. Incidentally, this film was produced by James Bond co-producer Harry Saltzman!
