Review of Child's Play (1993) by Ethan A — 26 Jun 2011
I can see where it would be hard to watch this film for the first time almost 25 years after its release and take it seriously. Chucky has been stapled into our pop culture so long it may be difficult to remember why he is there in the first place. The first Child's Play is a terrifying & hilariously original horror film that is one of the best of its time. It's too bad that we now consider Chucky some smartass with a knife, because back then...he was one scary freaking doll.
Just in case you don't know what this is about, Child's Play follows a serial killer who through some ridiculous voodoo, gets trapped inside of a doll. He is then bought by a family and in order to switch back to a human, he must switch places with the first person he made contact with...a 6 year old boy. For a horror movie, this is a very well acted film, particularly from Catherine Hicks as the boy's mom, and Brad Dourif as the amazing Chucky. Brad Dourif has such a terrifying voice, they couldn't have picked a better actor to portray him. It's cheesiness may turn off some viewers, or some people's fear of dolls, but if you want to see a film that started a phenomenon and spawned countless ripoffs...look no further.
