Review of Child's Play (1993) by G.m. W — 15 Jul 2014
"MEET YOUR NEW PLAYMATE CHUCKY".
- 'Child's Play' is a 1988 horror film by director Tom Holland (Psycho 2, Fright Night) and the first part of the popular film series starring the killer doll Chucky. I do have a soft spot for cult horror flicks, so I can't really say anything bad. Of course the genre needs to please you. In this first part we see how serial killer Charles Lee Ray transferred his soul into a Good Guy Doll. Starring Brad Dourif (Child's Play franchise, Lord of the Rings films), Alex Vincent (Child's Play 2, On the Ropes), Catherine Hicks (7th Heaven, Marilyn: the Untold Story) and Chris Sanderson (Fright Night, the Nightmare Before Christmas). "This doll is killer...".
Detective Mike Norris (Sanderson) is on the tail of serial killer Charles Lee Ray (Dourif). After a shootout, in which he takes a deadly shot the Lakeshore Strangler takes refuge in a toy store. There he uses his voodoo-powers to transfer his soul into a Good Guy Doll. The store explodes and Mike assumes that that was the end of the killer.
For his sixth birthday, Andy Barclay (Vincent) wants to have a Good Guy Doll. His single mother Karen (Hicks) has to work a lot, is able to buy a doll from a hobo, who claims to have found it near a burned-out toy store. Andy is thrilled with his new toy, but will soon discover that Chucky has deadly plans in store with him...
