Review of Child 44 (2015) by Smiyamot — 20 Dec 2015
We see Tom Hardy during WW2, he's a hero, a leader. He just wants to do the right thing. And yet, post-war, he's caught up in a world of the absurd, whatever Joseph Stalin says "there is no murder in (worker's) paradise" everyone obeys.
So when his best bud from the war says his son was murdered, what can he do? He's a policeman and wants to solve the murder but is ordered to obey. Some other reviewers find this off putting; guess they don't believe this is how it is under a dictator.
My wife left China when she was 40 so I asked her if that is what it was like under Chairman Mao. She said yes. Must be hard for Americans to relate to living like that. As such, I thought the movie was great depicting his struggle using guile and cunning to catch the killer without getting caught by his own "secret" police.
