Review of Child 44 (2015) by Kevin R — 10 Aug 2015
I married you because that's what people do.
During the Stalin era of the Soviet Union a police officer is disgraced because of the choices of his wife and he decides to take a demotion to save their lives. Meanwhile, his last case as a police officer was hunting down a serial killer killing children all over the countryside. Despite reduced resources and position, due to the police officer's history, he will stop at nothing find the killer...even putting his family at risk.
"They asked me to denounce you.".
Daneil Espinosa, director of Safe House, Easy Money, Outside Love, and the upcoming Utvandrarna, delivers Child 44. The storyline for this picture has a lot of components and is very intricate. It has a love story, a historical gripping setting, and a serial killer all mixed together. The acting is brilliant and the cast includes Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Gary Oldman, and Jason Clarke.
"A train doesn't undress a boy.".
My girlfriend grabbed this from Redbox for us since she knows I adore Tom Hardy and these previews looked fairly solid. The movie is pretty good and likely would have been perfect if it had the serial killer more throughout the picture (they should have shown some of the killings, even if not the killer entirely). The movie was just a hair shy from living up to its potential, but is worth a viewing.
"They can learn a lesson from this.".
Grade: B/B+.
