Review of Chief Zabu (2016) by Cody C — 04 Nov 2016
You would expect a movie that was made 30 years ago to be outdated, but when you watch Chief Zabu you're going to be surprised by how relevant it is. The current election has, at one point or another, made us wonder how certain people got where they are in the realm of politics.
Chief Zabu reflects this like a mirror and it was refreshing. The film itself is about two business men, Ben Sydney and Sammy Brooks (played by Allen Garfield and Zack Norman), who don't exactly think things through.
Believing they will become millionaires and important, they end up immersing themselves in a deal full of shady elite. This deal leads them to meet the President of Tiberaku, Chief Henri Zabu (Manu Tupou) who outwardly seems like a powerful man.
As the story unravels around Ben and Sammy, so do these other high-status characters. We as the audience see that these characters aren't what they appear to be to the public eye. As you watch Chief Zabu you may find yourself drawing many comparisons to certain politicians of today, making you realize that we are actually living in a world this movie is satirizing.
For that, you could say Chief Zabu was ahead of its time or maybe it just waiting for the perfect time to be released.
