Review of Chicago (2002) by Nicholas F — 27 Aug 2014
Arguably one of the best movie musicals of all time, Rob Marshall's Chicago is a dazzling and vibrant spectacle well worth the movie viewing experience. Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones are just absolutely perfect as Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly.
These women are beautiful on the eyes (and ears) but are also dangerous to misogynistic men. Also Richard Gere is the cinematic glue of this film as he plays Billy Flynn, the best and slickest lawyer in all of Chicago.
Lending phenomenal supporting actors include Queen Latifah belting it out as Matron Mama Morton, John C. Reilly as the clueless but lovable schmuck Amos Hart, and Dominic West as Roxie's extramarital lover Fred Casely.
This movie is chock full of beautiful and powerful musical numbers, including but not limited to "All That Jazz," "We Both Reached for the Gun," and "Razzle Dazzle." Gere, Zellweger, and Zeta-Jones provide fantastic singing, dancing, and acting as they bring to their characters and songs alive.
Chicago wholeheartedly deserved the Oscar for Best Picture for 2002 as it was a truly spectacular joyride.
