Review of Chicago (1927) by Min K — 03 Apr 2011
A very well-conceived adaptation from stage to film (a rarity with movie musicals). In my opinion, the performances are solid, though not necessarily spectacular (but this is usual with most contemporary film musicals).
What appeals to me chiefly about this film is the visual artistry it creates, setting up a dazzling - if not over-stated - and satirical comparison of show business and a crime-to-fame-ridden windy city of the 1930's.
The editing and cinematrography is brilliant, as are the costumes and sets. The music, of course, remain virtually the same as their famous Broadway counterparts, but it's worth mentioning that the success of "Chicago" as a film still depends on these darkly upbeat tunes' effectiveness.
