Review of Chi-Raq (2015) by Tom S — 23 Feb 2016
Discussing the film after, a friend and I concluded that while we didn't like it very much, we were happy that it existed. The endless stream of pontificating will probably move many a viewer-and heck, it moved me when John Cusack spoke or Jennifer Hudson mourned, and Teyonah Harris and Samuel L.
Jackson never miss a note. Yet it's also difficult to be entirely convinced by a film that zigzags from a farce to melodrama to satire to polemic to musical several times in a matter of minutes. It's also difficult to not, at times, get caught up in the sheer energy.
I just wish it'd had a little less.
