Review of Chi-Raq (2015) by Jahleel D — 09 Jan 2016
Finally had a chance to see Chi-raq. Let me start off by saying attempting to make a musical comedy about a truly dramatic situation going on right now in Chicago is no easy task. I commend Spike for attempting to pull it off.
The question is does he? Yes and no. Chi-raq is a mixture of farcical comedy, musical numbers and over the top drama. And always very preachy. At times, the tone is confusing, but the message never was.
And it's a great message that unfortunately falls on too many deaf ears. But the attack plan that Spike uses is so uneven, I don't know that I can completely recommend "Chi-Raq." The opening credits number is as powerful today as Rosie Perez's dance number in "Do The Right Thing.
" Matty Libatique's cinematography is outstanding as is the moving score by Terrence Blanchard. There has been a lot of anger directed at the film before it even opened. I don't think that anger is deserved.
Besides Spike is at his best when he is controversial. I believe this commentary on Black on Black crime in Chicago brings him back to that realm, which I for one, welcome. Three Ball Point Pens.
