Review of Cherry 2000 (1987) by Vinyl R — 21 Sep 2008
Cherry2000 is of the very best films of the "Spunky, resourceful redhead gal guides handsome stranger on his quest through road-warrior-like wastelands" genre of films.
If you can ignore the horribly choreographed and filmed gun battles, and Melanie Griffith's bizarre delivery of lines, and the protagonists forced emotions this isn't a bad little flick. It's not bad enough to be a cult classic, but it's not really good enough to recommend highly either unless you have a soft spot for this kind of movie. (Look for the cameo by Cowboy Curtis).
A few corrections to the movie description here at RT.
"Post-apocalyptic tale set in the year 2017".
There are areas ('sectors') that resemble the standard sci-fi world of Mad Max but there are also areas of high civilization - maybe just a quibble, but 'post apocolyptic' seems like it would have to apply to an entire planet/continent not just isolated parts of it.
" about a man who builds female robots (for sexual purposes), but runs out of parts for his favorite type.".
The protagonist doesn't BUILD female robots. He OWNS one. It isn't just for sexual purposes. It breaks down and his robot parts/salesman is unable to get him a replacement robot.
" He begins a dangerous trek to reach the robot warehouse -- which is run by gun-toting maniacs.".
Ok.
"However, along the way the man is aided by an actual female, a courageous, gutsy soldier.".
There's nothing to indicate she is a 'soldier', she is referred to as a 'tracker' and is just a freelance guide into the wastelands of sector 7.
"Will the two defeat the trigger-happy psychos and obtain the spare parts?".
A reasonable question.
"Or will the robot-maker realize that a real woman is better than a machine?".
Putting aside the issue that these two options aren't necessarily mutually exclusive conditions, so besides one option or the other, both or neither could also be answered in the affirmative, he's not a 'robot-maker'.
