Review of Chéri (2009) by Steve S — 28 Oct 2009
Director Stephen Frears alternates between making effective, commercial films and small, obscure flops: This is one of the latter. Pfeiffer is good, and is at least trying to search out decent roles, but this film is pretty bland and unexceptional unfortunately.
There's precious little to the story, the tone is misjudged, and the very final line, courtesey of an unrequired voice over, is utterly laughable and undermines everything. I think it was supposed to be deep and meaningful, but instead it left me chortling.
Alright for a wet afternoon, but don't rush to see it.
