Review of Chef (2014) by Nozaman — 14 Oct 2015
A great effort from writer/director Jon Favreau. He does a great job of taking a simple premise and turning it into an authentic, at times funny, and often affecting film-- Chef plays like a satisfying short story.
At its heart, the film is about a father/son relationship, and Favreau does not dumb it down or fall back on (too many) clichés. You get the feeling these are real people with real issues, yet the film never veers into melodrama.
Only caveats: There are maybe a few too many "food porn" montages, and I don't totally buy that a guy like Favreau's Carl could have been with Sofia Vergara AND Scarlett Johansson-- He really doesn't have much to offer.
Overall, Chef is the rare film that actually earns the "feel good" label.
