Review of Che: Part One (2008) by Jon R — 26 Jun 2009
After I saw 'The Motorcycle Diaries,' I became interested in studying Che Guevera's writings to learn more about him....and he did have a fascinating life. This film doesn't get into much of his personal life and focuses on the overthrow of Batista.
It covers his trip to speak at the UN and that's one of my favorite parts in the film. Certainly the message he speaks rings very true even today. I like the structure of the film and how it goes back and forth from NY to Cuba and you see the idealism these guys had to take over an American-backed government.
You see too that if a group of people are committed to change and are willing to give everything for it, it can't be stopped. Cuba was a mini-Vietnam in the sense that it was a guerrilla war and unfortunately we didn't pay as much attention to how Batista fell so easily.
If you like films about history, you'll like this. It's not the most exciting film to watch but it's a good way to learn more about Che and Cuba.
