Review of Che: Part One (2008) by Eric S — 12 Aug 2009
Benecio Del Toro commands the screen and has easily become one of my top 5 favorite actors. Project after project he proves that he has the range, presence and depth in order to take on complex characters.
Unfortunately, if you know a thing or two about the real Che Guevara and how things really happend, you might start to view this film in a different light since A LOT of key details are missing. Some areas of the film are taken completely out of context and are flat out wrong historically.
Missing were key characters components. Guevara is painted in the fiml as the cool, collected, elder figure that is instrumental in trying to bring revolutionary change to latin america. The 100% humanitarian that's depicted is not accurate. A lot of Cuban exiles living in South Florida that were there for the revolution would contest to Guevara portrayal as a saint.
I think the packaging is a little bit too neat for this to be an accurate portrayal of a man that modern/pop/counter cultures emulate on t-shirts, posters and stickers. All and all, still a good quality film.
