Review of Chasing Amy (1997) by Drew M — 28 Jul 2009
My favorite Kevin Smith film and, having not watched this in roughly ten years, I had forgotten how dramatic it was. Joey Lauren Adams is quite amazing here and Affleck and Lee aren't bad either. Yet, Holden/Affleck's big plan to unite the three of them seems to be forced and overly idiotic.
Still, the coupling scene and the break up scene are very powerful. Quite often, Smith loses himself in his dialgoue and forgets the visual power of film. This isn't as true with Amy, where he intercuts a hockey match with a couple fighting, highlighting the emotional tension.
Sure, the scene doesn't need the joke that ends it by the two crowd members, but its very potent.
