Review of Chasing Amy (1997) by David G — 06 May 2013
Oddly Enough, out of Kevin Smith's 'Askewneverse' films, I've seen 'Chasing Amy' the least amount of times. This is quite odd since I generally agree with critics in saying the film is probably Smith's best work (Though that's arguable with fans like me).
'Chasing Amy' on paper sounds like a typical Rom-Com: Boy meets Girl, Girl has conflicted feelings with Boy, Boy and Girl resolve the problem. However, Smith is smart enough that he takes this idea and turns it around several loops before bringing you back home, where you may not get what you want at the end of the road.
It's this twisting narrative, the character development, the humor, and the excellent performances by Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, and Jason Lees all make 'Chasing Amy' a fantastic and enticing Comedy Drama that may leave you sad, may leave you smiling, but either way you leave satisfied by what you've seen.
