Review of Charlie Wilson's War (2007) by Adam L — 04 Aug 2009
It's Philip Seymour Hoffman's performance that keeps the film together, it was the very glue. His quirks all throughout and his outrage scene really do the trick and if it weren't for them, the film would've REALLY suffered.
Charlie being a bachelor in hot tubs with naked drunk girls and an office filled with lots of cute girls only goes so far. The political terms and aspect of this movie may be a little too much or not entertaining enough to keep the interests of the average viewer.
The film touches on a good subject, there is good that comes out in the end. I personally don't think it hits home enough to strike a message home with the common viewer and get them talking and thinking about it afterwards. Other than the sex that's used to sell it, but like I said, I think that only goes so far because there's so much sex everywhere else that someone doesn't need to get it here.
I wouldn't recommend it. But if someone insisted on it I wouldn't go out of my way to stop them, telling them they'll be sorry that they're proceeding with viewing the film.
