Review of Charlie Countryman (2013) by Erik T — 17 Dec 2013
One of the most sorely under appreciated films of the year! This is a brilliant commentary on death and love. Fredrik Bond seamlessly combines the romance, road trip drama, and crime thriller genres into one epic, incredibly insane film.
I think the reason behind this film's mixed reception is probably the changes in tone. Bond's transitions from romantic to dark and gritty are a little sudden and probably throw some people. I was thrown off a little myself, but I just worked with it.
Shia LaBeouf delivers what is unquestionably the best performance of his career. In a film this outrageous and brilliant, the fact that he could convince me right off the bat and keep me convinced through every wild and sometimes painfully disturbing turn is very impressive.
Another beautiful and ambitious film that will undoubtedly get no love come awards season.
